New Patient FAQs

  • We follow the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association guidelines, which recommends that children have their first dental visit around their first birthday. Infants and toddlers often sit on their parents lap during the entire visit. Dr. Davies utilizes a lap-to-lap (parents lap to dentists lap) technique to examine and clean young children's teeth.

  • You play an important role in preparing your child for their first visit. We ask that you keep all talk and thoughts positive. Children are very good at sensing anxiety in their parents. Tell your child that the dentist and the "dentist's helpers" will show and tell them everything. Tell your child that they will have their teeth cleaned and "counted". Please avoid unpleasant words like "needle", "shot", "pull", and "drill". If you tell your child they will have fun at the dentist, they will!

  • Your child will have their picture taken and are given a magnet of themselves to take home. Dr. Davies and staff use a tell-show-do method to inform children of all ages what to expect. Everything used is introduced to your child and they will be encouraged to touch, feel, and hold things. Dr. Davies and staff also use positive reinforcement. They will compliment your child often. Whatever your child’s needs are at their first visit, be assured they will be treated in a gentle, caring manner in a kid friendly environment.
